Breeding of Brown Anther Type Male Sterile Lines with High Phenotypic Stability in Carrots

Abstract

|
|
To develope superior F₁ hybrid variety of carrots, acquisition of male sterile lines with high seed-production ability and stable expression of male sterility is essential. This experiment was aimed to breed promising brown anther type male sterile lines with those characteristics. Twenty nine brown anther type male sterile lines were screened in 1989, and 18 lines were selected among them on the basis of performance and stability of male sterility. Descendant sublines from these lines were tested successively in 1990 and finally 80 promising sublines of brown anther type male sterile were selected.
